Light Touch Therapies

Body Mechanics Therapy (BMT)  A self-help approach to pain relief, following an exercise programme of 3-6 minutes daily. Muscles are the pulling power on our structural frame and incorrect use of the body results in muscles being shortened or lengthened. The ‘out of balance’ muscles gradually pull joints out of alignment and the result id pain. Treatment and self-help is normally given over six weeks so 3-6 appointments are necessary. BMT treats a range of ailments and is suitable for all age groups, especially children, since learning good posture will prevent all kinds of problems later in life.

Bowen Technique (BWT)   A series of gentle moves on muscles and connective tissue. The practitioner makes rolling-type movements on precise points of the body (through clothing) allowing muscles, soft tissue and energy within the body to re-align. There is no adjustment of hard tissue and no force is used. Treatment promotes pain relief and healing. BWT addresses many problems including back and neck pain, sports injuries and RSI. Problems with joints and chronic conditions also respond favourably. 2-3 treatments at weekly intervals usually provide long-lasting effect.

Cranio-Sacral Therapy (CST)   The practitioner places their hands on your sacrum and cranium and, making hardly any movement, frees the flow of spinal fluid and the flow of ‘shock-absorber’-type fluid around the brain. This relieves the pressure on the nerves which causes many problems. CST can help with neuralgia and migraine and with the discomfort following injuries to the head, enabling treatment of a wide range of conditions and improving health at all levels.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)   Gentle tapping on the emotional meridians of the face and chest while the client repeats a simple verbal affirmation of the desired outcome clears the physical blocks which have impeded recovery. EFT addresses habits, addictions, phobias, irrational fears, etc., and has remarkably swift results.

Health Kinesiology (HKN)   The meridian system is balanced and practitioners use muscle testing to find the best help for a particular need. Usually this involves holding acupuncture points combined with any of the following: flower essences, crystals, magnets, homeopathic remedies, word or thought form, nutritional supplement, a sound, a light, a colour. HKN helps on all levels.

Indian Head Massage (IHM)   A traditional treatment used by Indian women for over 1000 years to relieve stress, tension headaches, eyestrain and insomnia. A rhythmic massage to upper back, shoulders, neck, scalp and face, IHM is very detoxifying, soothing and deeply relaxing.

Kinesiology (KIN)   Each group of muscles relates to other parts of the body so testing how muscles respond to gentle pressure shows how the body is functioning. KIN looks for imbalance in nutrition and energy, then revitalises with fingertip massage to pressure points on the head and body. Anyone can benefit, but KIN is best known for helping allergies or food sensitivities, because this can result in a variety of symptoms. Promotes physical, emotional and nutritional balance.

Muscle Release Therapy (MRT)  The body is taken back through movements that initially created problems, finding the preferred posture for the affected part of the body and then working to undo the damage. This is quite different from techniques which practise forceful adjustments. If a muscle is tight the practitioner gently tightens it further so that increased blood flow to that muscle will enable it to regain normal form. MRT can help whiplash injuries, headaches, spine and pelvic conditions, breathing problems, sinus problems and glue ear.

Note   MRT was previously called Body Stress Release (BSR), a name which was also used by practitioners of an entirely different therapy. The new name has been adopted to avoid confusion.

Orthobionomy (OBY)  is similar to MRT

Polarity Therapy (PLT)  Relieves congestion in energy flow to help return to a state of balance. The therapist makes contact with the fascial systems of the body (the sheets of connective tissue underlying the skin and surrounding muscles), which is viewed as a ‘highway for touch’. Trauma on the body results in fascia constrictions – scar tissue and adhesions – and PLT frees these, together with releasing the trauma that caused the congestion. Reflex points on the body show where energy is congested; just as reflexologists work on points on the hands and feet, PLT therapists use reflex points all over the body.

Reflexology (RFX)  There are points in the feet which correspond with all other parts of the body, so gentle pressure and specific massage techniques are applied to the reflex points to increase energy flow to the corresponding parts of the body. RFX reflects the state of heath of the whole body, and well-being is promoted by correcting imbalances before they develop. It is extremely relaxing and maintains health by strengthening all body systems. Used to treat a wide range of disorders, particularly anything stress-related.

Re-Harmonisng (RHM)  Treats any condition by facilitating energy flow. Any stress or shock inhibits smooth energy flow, leading to symptoms from slight pain to severe illness. A blueprint for a perfect energy field influences our genetic make-up and the memory of this blueprint stays with us. RHM reminds the body of the original blueprint; the therapist ‘tunes in’ and corrects the mis-flow of energy.

Reiki (RKI)  “Reiki” is Japanese for “universal life energy” and the RKI practitioner acts as a channel for Ki energy to be passed to the recipient, thereby activating the body’s natural ability to heal itself while restoring balance. Promoting powerful healing, RKI releases blocked energy, cleanses the body of toxins, and works to create balance on all levels of being. Treatment consists of the recipient relaxing fully-clothed while the practitioner gently places their hands on specific energy centres for a few minutes. Useful for any age, pregnant women, and anyone recovering from surgery.

Rejuvanessence (REJ)  The face is the primary organ of emotional expression; when we want to see what a person is feeling, we look at their face. Every trauma or stress sets itself into the facial muscles. REJ is a unique form of facial massage which revitalises the whole body-mind system. Precise, gentle fingertip massage softens and lifts the face. Working on meridian lines and acupuncture points releases tension from the muscles of face, neck, skull and shoulders. Useful for improving jaw function and complexion, as well as for easing headaches and migraine.

Spinal Touch Therapy (STT)  Any deformity of the spine causes excess tissue pressure on the nerve roots emerging from the vertebrae. As the whole body is governed by the nerves, this can cause organ malfunction or false reporting of pain to the brain. For example, pressure on thoracic vertebra 1 can suggest pain in the lower arms, tingling fingers and shortness of breath – when there is nothing wrong with these body parts! The therapist uses extremely light massage technique on the buttocks, spine, shoulders, neck, head and belly to convince the tense spinal muscles to relax. When they do, the spine is restored and tissue pressure is removed so the body will function properly without pain. STT has no contra-indications, so is safe for all people.

Therapeutic Touch (ThT)  A system of healing which has been taught for many years in American hospitals and schools of nursing. The three elements of practical skills taught in UK include: hands-on technique of healing, chelation of the physical body, and healing of the seven subtle bodies comprising the human energy field.

Touch for Health (TfH)  A modified form of kinesiology, using the body’s muscles to test and treat organs as well as aid specific conditions, TfH seeks to channel energy in the body to prevent sickness. Learn to use a series of muscle tests to detect physical imbalance and the effect on the emotions, then correct the faults with light touch.
